Thanks for the XP version.
The portable version by PortableApps.com has arrived! What about a link at the LibreCAD download page?
Handy for having several installed to experiment with various layouts. I can use them with Linux and Wine.
The Linux appimage is not really self-contained. When using several always the last used configuration is loaded.

Aahh, at last! Now we might hope for a new PortableApps version.

I guess there will not be a Win XP version anymore, right?

Still, I'm curiously awaiting 2.2.x releases, wondering which available or maybe even new contributions will find their way into LibreCAD.

But now you may generously allow yourself a rest.

 Finally, here it is!

It took far too long to present this new stable LibreCAD version.
Already announced several times, new obstacles kept appearing. But the main cause, however, is the loss of manpower in recent years.
We no longer have the resources to maintain a stable and a development branch side by side.
In addition, there were many problems in our parallel project libdxfrw, which we also take care of.
And there are also many invisible tasks to be dealt with, such as moving to a new cloud server, a new homepage, looking for financing our expenses, to name just a few.

About 4800 commits have been made since the last stable version 2.1.3. Too much to go into detail.
So here are a few notable changes in the new version 2.2.0:
* many causes of crashes have been eliminated
* eliminated DWG issues in libdxfrw, which caused several crashes
* the performance of panning and zooming in large files has been significantly improved
* the undo/redo engine has been completely revised due to several problems
* adjustments for new compiler and Qt versions were required
* extension of the command line, multi-line commands, paste and open command files
* improvement of the print preview, with tiled printing and line widths adjustment
* multiple selection and bulk actions in block and layer lists

By expanding our CI, we can now easily provide up-to-date binary packages that allow many users to easily test and bug hunt on Windows, MacOS and Linux.

The new release also has an online manual which is hosted at Read the Docs.

This new stable version 2.2.0 finally replaces the previous stable 2.1.3.

Unfortunately, we have to disappoint people who are hoping for a soon release of LibreCAD 3. It is still a long way from productive use.
Also there are still many contributions available for version 2.2 we wont waste. These can now be integrated into an unstable development branch. That means there will probably be one or two more feature release 2.2.x.
There may be LibreCAD 3 releases in parallel in future, but for the time being, not with the features that LibreCAD 2.2 currently offers.

At last, let me mention, that we recently resumed to accept financial contributions again. These are basically used to pay our expenses for hosting and domain services.
This has become possible through OpenCollective and by GitHub Sponsors.

Please, find the new release on Github:
https://github.com/LibreCAD/LibreCAD/releases/tag/2.2.0
or SourceForge:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/librecad/files/
Yes, we do, but for other reasons.
That's why the current build is not usable for the appimage.
Next is to migrate to travis-ci.com because travis-ci.org is about to shut down.

We have a new Release Candidate for LibreCAD 2.2.0.
https://github.com/LibreCAD/LibreCAD/releases/tag/2.2.0-rc2

Binary packages can be found on the GitHub release page linked above and also on our SourceForge site, which is linked from the GitHub site too.

There were recently 2 serious bugs fixed with reading DWG files, so this version hopefully solves some issues and crashes with DWG files.

We still need a way to deploy a binary Linux package, preferred as AppImage.
If someone is experienced in this, any help is welcome.

Has anyone managed to build LC3 and run it? I'm willing to try but I wouldn't hold my breath. I think github can do nightly builds right?

For certain LibreCAD urgently needs a new official release. For visibility in the public, announcements, forums, appearance at portableapps etc. Against frustration of users. The new pretty readthedocs refers to 2.2.0, the normal user will only obtain 2.1.3. Drawings done now might have to be worked over when later opened in 2.2.0, due to changes in handling. 2.2.0 is better and quite stable. Against frustration of developers, as it takes so long for their contributions to be incorporated and used.
There is a queue of commits with improvements waiting to be merged. Our Lord(ofBikes) is now about working them up after a long pause. Can he be helped? Let's get a new release out, be it perfect or not. You can always push a bugfix release after it.

I totally disagree but it's clear why people form this view. The LibreCAD Mushroom Management system doesn't present the fantastic work done by the community for people to make an informed view. It is important because the whole community misses out on valuable contributions from people that don't join the community. Image what could be achieved with double the resources.

How to make the LibreCAD community more vibrant:

1. Make a plan so community contributions to develop LibreCAD are used efficiently and effectively.
2. Communicate with the community. Celebrate our successes by committing to regular updates on what is happening in the community, how planned goals are progressing.
3. Releases. Forget the concept of Draft - release every project regularly (say quarterly) so the community can test the work and contribute to development taking the best direction and improving every version. (There's no benefit developing the perfect Netscape.) The Pareto Principle says most of the benefit occurs from the first work anyway.
4. Keep Development (Master) branches separate from Release (Stable) branches for all projects.

Many open source communities manage these things more effectively than LibreCAD. What do you think?

 The die is cast!

Yesterday Google announced the accepted students and we have got one slot for a promising student to work on LibreCAD 3 development this summer.

Please welcome Kartik Kumar, a student from National Institute of Technology, Hamipur, India.
His proposal is about OpenGL rendering in LibreCAD 3 to replace the Cairo engine.
He will work from June to August on this project and we wish him good luck for this challenge!

A new round of Google Summer of Code is gather speed.

We are happy to announce, that once again, LibreCAD is part of GSoC in 2019!

Again, under the umbrella of BRL-CAD, a couple of CAD/CAM/CAE or short CAx organizations going to mentor students for a 3 month full time coding challenge during their summer break.
The students, when they participate successfully, will gain experience, reputation and also a certificate and a stipend from Google.
Our value will be the progress, bringing LibreCAD 3 to a new level and hopefully attract the participants to stay longer with us and become a regular contributor.

This year we try a new approach and created a common platform under the name OpenCAx for cross-cutting concerns. We use the OpenCAx term for quite some time, but now it becomes more clearer.
Beside the information from Google at https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/ we have additional content for students at https://opencax.github.io/.
Project ideas are listed under https://github.com/opencax/GSoC/issues and especially for LibreCAD one can filter by project.

If you are a student who is eligible for the program, have some C++ skills and prefer coding over selling burgers, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
Or you know one who might be interested, let him know about this great chance.
Look out for Armin (LordOfBikes) or Florian (Feragon) on our community chat channels IRC #librecad or Zulip or reply to any project idea.

 Happy Friday the 13th! ;D

For certain "need to know" reasons, the release of 2.1.0 will happen before the end of this month.
I'm thinking a full moon release (the 21st).

Beta means that I have added all the new features, but there might be undiscovered bugs.

We are participating again under the umbrella of BRL-CAD. Big thanks to Sean for handling the organization application part.

For our LibreCAD side, there are many great ideas accumulated over the years, and we do expect still better ideas from perspective students.

For students interested in working at areas immediately beneficial to lots of end users, especially for those interested in doing geometry and algebra on computers, it's the time for introducing yourself and working hard towards your proposal.

Happy new year! LibreCAD 2.0.9 released

This is mostly a bug fixing release.

Fixed a few crashes due to undo and deleted entities;

Rallaz fixed quite many issues in dxf and DWG support.

If you are using spline/splinepoints, you may find some improvement in 2.0.9, as spline mirroring is fixed, and there is some cleanup for spline property editors, thanks to jaise for identifying this bug.

If you use the feature "Draw -> Line -> Rectangle", please note a polyline is drawn instead of 4 separate lines.

There are lots of fixes on hatching issues as well: most notably, hatch preview works again!

Various polyline issues are also fixed: bevel/fillet, equidistant, and some minor cleanup.

Jerry worked on several issues with command auto-completion and supported commands.

Command line

The left and right dock areas are now dominant,
which means that if you dock the command line at the top or bottom
it will only expand between the left and right dock areas,
instead of modifying them.

The command line's title bar will automatically switch orientation

Styles and Style Sheets

You can now dramatically change the way LibreCAD looks!

snap indicator

There is now an alternative to the Crosshair,
which is called Spiderweb (for lack of a different name).
This is useful if you work with orthogonal lines a lot
and don't want the crosshair hiding the preview.
https://youtu.be/0v9TS7IyvKM

You can also change the color of the snap indicator now.
This is useful if you use a white background (or if you just want a different color).

window activation

When a sub-window (drawing) is closed the last active sub-window will be re-activated.

tabs

Tabs are now movable by dragging and dropping.

There is a new option in Application preferences → Defaults
to start in tab mode.

modify tools and selection

You can once again activate a modify tool
then select some objects,
then press Enter,
and then continue.

Something new is that you can use XButton1 instead of Enter.

entering commands

XButton1 will also act like Enter for the command line.

xbutton1
Xbutton1 is a side button on a PC mouse (usually for going back in a web browser).
I don't know if mice for Mac have what is considered an Xbutton1.
There are other options new in Qt5 we can try (Qt::BackButton).
The use of this button is experimental and might change.

option to remove scrollbars
You can now remove the scrollbars in Application Preferences.
Removing them significantly improves panning performance. :-]
More investigation could lead to improved performance with scrollbars.

selection
There is now a select toolbar, and category in the category toolbar.
